Nov 03, 1942 - Jan 15, 2018
Betty Holifield “Hope” Spencer, a grand lady with a great laugh, a quick wit, a loving heart and a beautiful soul died peacefully January 15, 2018, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, NC, surrounded by her extended family.
Hope was born in Laurel, MS on November 3, 1942 to Mary Elizabeth Hopkins and Loyce Holifield. She was proceeded in death by her beloved soulmate, Dr. William J. “Bill” Spencer and her granddaughter Abby. She is survived by daughters Anne Pope (Alex), Traci Rankins (Erik) and Elizabeth Pierce (Daryl), her three younger brothers Bo, Buddy and Butch, grandchildren Spencer, Cooper and Lexi and many other cherished grandchildren and relatives.
Hope was an accomplished chef, a world traveler, a compassionate listener, a voracious book worm, a lover of birds and, most importantly, a mother of unwavering loyalty who was the heart and soul of her family. Her hope for the possibilities of a better tomorrow illuminated everyone she touched.
The defining moment in Hope’s life was meeting her partner and true love, Bill. They are together again by each other’s side as they should be, traveling through eternity.
A private family service has been scheduled. Donations can be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home of Winston-Salem in honor of Betty “Hope” Spencer.

God strengthens us by giving us "the power beyond what is normal" to make it through each passing day. Psalm 46:1 says: "God is our refuge and strength, a help that is readily found in times of distress". Please accept my sincere condolences. Always remember God loves you and he cares for you! (Psalm 36:7; 1 Peter 5:7)
Jim and I are lifting you and your family up in prayer. I understand your Mom was a wonderful person, wife, Mother and Grandmother. She will be missed by many! Our thoughts are with you Anne.
