Mary Elizabeth Emler, 105, a resident of the Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, died on Wednesday, October 25, 2017. She was born October 24, 1912 in Linton Township, Coshocton County, in Eastern Ohio on a farm named North Bend. Her parents were Burt Miskimen and Alice Domoney Miskimen. She was the oldest of three children and she was the fifth generation to be born on that Ohio farm. Mary grew up in the country moving into town midway through her freshman year in high school and attended three different high schools as well as Ohio State University.

She married Paul Wiggins Emler in 1933, and they were married 71 years before his passing in 2005. They lived in ten different counties in Ohio before moving to New Jersey in 1949. Mary and Paul lived in Chatham, New Jersey for 42 years where they raised their three children. They re-located to Winston-Salem and Arbor Acres in 1993.

Mary was always active in the Methodist Church at the local and district level. She was involved with the YWCA, scouting, DAR, and was a lifetime member of the League of Women Voters. She eagerly shared her enjoyment of sewing, quilting and gardening with her growing family and friends. She had the remarkable good fortune of being able to be actively engaged in the world around her until a short time before her death.

Her oldest son, Paul, Jr. predeceased her in 2013 and his wife Jeanne died in 2015. Mary is survived by her son John and his wife Sandy of Duxbury, Massachusetts, and daughter Sarah Straub and her husband Carl of Fox Island, Washington. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Arbor Acres Robinson Hall at 3:00 p.m. on November 19, 2017. An internment service will follow in Chatham, New Jersey at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Resident Assistance Fund, Arbor Acres, 1240 Arbor Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104 or to Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 West Fifth Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27102.

God cares for the brokenhearted; Psalm 34:18 assures us that he is close to them. Psalm 147:3 says: "He heals the brokenhearted; He binds up their wounds". 1 Peter 5:7 "Throw all your anxiety (cares, worries) on him, because he cares for you". Please accept my sincere condolences. Always remember God loves you and he cares for you! (Psalm 36:7; Isaiah 41:13) jw.org
