Gerard Eugene "Gene" Leonard

Gerard Eugene "Gene" Leonard died on Thursday October 8 at Brookridge Retirement Community. He was 86. He was born August 2, 1929 in Welcome, NC to the late David Gerard and Magdalene Koontz Leonard. He graduated from Welcome High School in 1946 and North Carolina State University in 1950 with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict obtaining the rank of First Lieutenant. In 1954 he began his engineering career at Western Electric/Bell Labs, working in both Winston-Salem and Greensboro. He later joined R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, retiring in 1986.

He was a resident of Kernersville for almost 40 years before relocating to Winston-Salem in 2003. His wife Yvonne Hyatt Leonard died in 1990. He is survived by his daughters, Carla Leonard Agreda (Victor) of Knoxville, TN and Dee Anna Leonard Holbrook of Kingsport, TN; his son, Curtis G. Leonard of Winston-Salem; sisters, Carolyn Leonard Cheatwood (Charles) of San Angelo, TX and Nancy M. Leonard of Welcome; brother, Phil K. Leonard (Kitty) of Lexington and three grandsons, Vic Agreda and Joseph Agreda of Knoxville, Michael Agreda of Winter Park, FL; two great grandchildren, Weston and Belle Agreda and his good friend, Ann Jones of Kernersville.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at Kernersville Moravian Church with the Rev. John Rights officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall and later at his son's home in Winston-Salem. His ashes will be interred alongside his beloved wife in the Midway Methodist Church Cemetery.
