Mary Jo Wooten Spaugh, August 4, 1937- July 2, 2012.
Mary Jo Wooten Spaugh passed away on July 2, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer, having previously been healed from leukemia 22 years ago. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race. I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7.

She spent her early life in Charlotte and was a proud graduate of Central High School. She attended Salem College and graduated from Queens College. Mary Jo retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System and spent most of her career in the 2nd grade at Moore Elementary School. She was a teacher each day of her life. She was President of the Women’s Fellowship, Chairman of the Candle Tea, Circle Leader, Sunday School Teacher, Prayer Tree leader, member of the Board of Elders of Home Church and Salem Congregation. She was active in the community being a volunteer with Sunnyside Ministry, Meals on Wheels, Derrick L Davis Forsyth Cancer Center and served on the Forsyth Medical Center Auxiliary Board of Directors.
Mary Jo married Robert Arthur Spaugh on May 13, 1961 and they enjoyed more than 51 wonderful years of marriage together. She is survived by her devoted husband Arthur of the home; Daughter Merrily Spaugh of the home; Son Robert G. Spaugh and wife Kaye Hege Spaugh, and her three precious grandchildren: Caroline, Andrew and Michael Spaugh, of Lexington, N.C.; Sister Judy W. Thrash of Charlotte, N.C.; Brother-in-law Gordon (Nancy) Spaugh of Winston-Salem; and six nieces and nephews. Mary Jo loved her God, her family, her Church, her students, her kitchen and her dachshunds.
A graveside service will be held in God’s Acre at 3:15 p.m. on Friday, July 6, with the Rev. Doug Kearney officiating. A memorial service will follow in Home Moravian Church at 4:00 p.m. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the service. "Death is swallowed up in victory." "O death, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ”. 1 Corinthians 15:55-57.
The family expresses its appreciation to the personnel of Hospice & Palliative Care for their kind and compassionate service. Online condolences may be sent to www.salemfh.com.

I have fond memories of attending Midwood Grammar School in Charlotte with Mary Jo in the 1940's. We both were members of a girl's club in Woodmen of the World that met on her street and I recall going to her house once when her mother was making dresses on the sewing machine for Mary Jo and her sister. I was impressed by that because my mother did that for my sister and me. Not many of our friends were that fortunate to have most of our clothes sewn by our mothers. Mary Jo and I graduated from Charlotte Central High School together in 1955.
I send my best wishes to all of her family. She was a very special person.

Mary Jo was a terrific teacher and a wonderful human being. We loved her from the first time Heather set foot in her first-grade class and were fortunate enough to get her for the second grade as well. A warm, thoughtful, loving person, Mary Jo will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. Our hearts go out to you, Arthur.

Mary Jo was truly a "southern" lady as well as a fine person. I enjoyed getting to know her our first two years as day students at Salem and then seeing her at various happenings of the Moravian Church through the years. She will be truly missed and many lives are richer for having known her.

Mrs. Spaugh was my favorite teacher, and I was lucky enough to have her for both first and second grade at Moore Elementary. She was so kind and compassionate, and I remember the way my mind broadened in her classroom. Other than my parents, she was one of the people who understood me best, and she always inspired me to do great things. She will be sorely missed by me and many other students whose lives she touched. My greatest sympathies to Mr. Spaugh and her family.

Dear Arthur and Family,
Please accept my sincere sorrow in the passing of Mary Jo. She was a wonderful person and teacher. She took on any job willingly and always offered to help in all school endeavors.
It was a joy for me to have the experience of working with her for a number of years. She was a love and joy to all at Moorel.
I am practically house bound except when someone takes me to my doctor appointments. Were it not for that I would surely attend the funeral. My best wishes to all members of your family.
Sincerely,
Geneva B. Brown

Dear Arthur and family,
I was sadden to hear of your loss.
I was a classmate and friend of Mary Jo's at Central High School. I have fond memories of being with her many times, with other classmates, and being in her home and knowing her Mother and Dad. What a beautiful family. It was such a pleasure to see Mary Jo and meeting you, Arthur, at the Class Reunion in 2005. I do know your heavy hearts, as I lost my husband 5/2010. My prayers are with you and your family. May God Grant you Peace and Grace.
