Samuel Lewis Booke
Samuel Lewis Booke, Jr. died on Friday morning June 15, 2012 after a lengthy hospitalization following heart surgery. He was the son of Samuel L. Booke, Sr. and Anne Cooke Booke and was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem, NC.
After graduating from R. J. Reynolds High School and the University of North Carolina, Sam served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He became a Certified Public Accountant and worked for A.M. Pullen Public Accountants and Integon before becoming Chairman of the Board of Booke and Company, McNeary Inc. and Modern Turf. Sam was a devoted citizen of this city and served on many boards such as Hospice, the United Way, the Downtown Winston-Salem Association, the Chamber of Commerce, and Civic Ventures. His interests included many varied enterprises such as Altadontics, public education, and downtown development. He had a lifelong love of boats and the water and maintained residences at High Rock Lake and Wrightsville Beach for many years. His many friends and associates enjoyed his lively mind and interest in improving their health as well as his great advice on a myriad of subjects.
Sam was married to Eleanor Rose Booke for 48 years until her death in 2007. He is survived by their three children: Samuel L. Booke III and his wife, Cindy, of Charlotte, and their children, Anne and Sam; Mary Booke Kerfoot and husband, Hank, of Camden, SC., and their children, Sarah, Henry and Libby; and Elizabeth Booke Vaughn and her husband, Patrick, of Charlotte, and their children, Lane, Patrick and Olivia. He is also survived by his brother, Henry (Penny) M. Booke and wife, Libby, and their daughter, Martha Booke, and her son, Sy, of Rio de Janeiro.
Sam was a devoted grandfather and shared many wonderful times with his eight grandchildren. His interest in education was reflected by his support of public school teachers and their needs through his own personal philanthropy.
A visitation for friends and associates will be held on Monday evening June 18, 2012 from 5:30-7:30 pm at the home of Penny and Libby Booke, 930 Wellington Road, Winston-Salem, NC. A memorial service and celebration of his life will take place in the sanctuary of Centenary Methodist Church at 11:00 am on Tuesday, June 19, 2012.
Memorials may be made to the Sam and Anne Booke Family Trust at The Winston-Salem Foundation, 860 W. Fifth St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Online condolences may be made to www.salemfh.com.
The Booke family wishes to send a heartfelt thank-you to the many nurses and doctors involved with Sam’s care in the Cardiac ICU and CVCC at Forsyth Memorial Hospital.

I was Sam's computer salesman for many, many years at Booke and Co. and what a pleasant experience.
He always treated me and all members of the Unisys team with the greatest respect and we all felt that he truely appreciated the job we were doing.
I don't think I ever went to Sam, but what he would stop whatever he was doing, listen intently, maybe ask a few questions, then he'd say, with a reassuring little smile, " Well, Good Luck".
Sam was a wonderful Gentlemen.
