Walter Douglas Long Boyle, Sr.
Mr. Walter Douglas Long Boyle, Sr. died June 5, 2012. Private mausoleum services will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie, Illinois.
Mr. Boyle was born in East Orange, New Jersey March 24, 1924, the son of the late Harold Lauren Boyle and Alma Long Boyle. He grew up in Lockney, Texas before moving to Illinois. He was a member of Troop 13 Boy Scouts in Kenilworth, Illinois, a graduate and officer of the New Trier Class of 1942 and a member of the 1942 New Trier High School State Champion Swim Team. He briefly attended Marion Military Institute in Marion, Alabama before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. He graduated from boot camp, platoon 57 in 1943. He was accepted into the Marine Raiders, and assigned a rubber boat military occupational specialty number. He later served as a Marine Officer during World War II and in the Korea Conflict. He was a graduate of the Armored School at Fort Knox, the Amphibious Warfare School at Quantico, Virginia and the Chemical, Biological and Radiological Warfare School in Maryland. He swam for the Quantico Marine Swim Team in 1950.
Mr. Boyle was a proud graduate of the University of California in Berkeley where he lettered in swimming. He was a member of the Beta Beta, senior honor society, the Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and the Skull and Keys Honor Society. He attended graduate school at Cornell University and graduated from the Oliver Wendell Holmes Leadership School in Washington, DC.
Mr. Boyle managed stores for the W.T. Grant Company in Detroit, Gary, Kansas City, Erie, Chicago and Milwaukee. He was President of the RH Macy Shopping Center in Kansas City and officer in many shopping center associations in suburban Chicago. He was CEO of the Walt Boyle Stores for 15 years. He fought a winning battle against Illinois Fair Trade Laws, and was represented by John Paul Stevens, later Supreme Court Justice. He retired to North Carolina where, in his youth, he had been treated well as a Marine Private.
Mr. Boyle had a lifetime affiliation with the YMCA. As a management trainee he lived in YMCAs in Gary, Indiana, Chicago’s Southtown YMCA and the downtown Kansas City, MO YMCA. He was a member of the Winston Salem YMCA for 25 years before joining Charlotte’s Uptown YMCA. In 1978 he was a North Carolina AAU All Star swimmer and broke YMCA national records in the Master’s 500 yd Freestyle and 200 yard Butterfly. He held numerous NC state records including the 1650 yd Freestyle. His proudest sports accomplishment was beating Michael Jordan in 3 hours of ping-pong after he hit age 70.
Mr. Boyle was a member of the Wake Forest Hospital Coy C. Carpenter Society, Bermuda Run Country Club in Bermuda Run, NC and a Founding Member of the Piedmont Club in Winston-Salem. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was an NRA Endowment member and member of the North Carolina Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. After moving to North Carolina, Mr. Boyle led Consolidated Companies in international sales and commissions for 30 years, becoming Senior Vice President.
Mr. Boyle was twice married, first to Ann Peterson Boyle of Kenilworth, Illinois in 1953. He then married and is survived by Joan Riley Buehler Boyle of Kenilworth, Illinois July 4th, 1965 whom he had dated at 17. He is survived by his brother, John William Robert Boyle of Phoenix; sons Harold Lauren Boyle II of Belews Creek, NC; Douglas Kane Boyle of Walkertown, NC; Walter Doulas Long Boyle, Jr. of Denver, CO; daughter Janna Cecile Greenwell of Melbourne, FL; stepsons Marty Buehler of Hinsdale, IL, Carl Buehler IV of Palatine, IL; and Jay Buehler of Whitefish Bay, WI; grandchildren Lauren Ashley Boyle, Addison Riley Boyle Greenwell, Morgan Buehler, Carl Michael Buehler, Martin Buehler, Jr., Grace Riley Buehler, Claire Buehler; great-grand daughter Ella Jeleh Lauren Yazdani; nieces Jami-Ross Wilkerson Avent of Winston-Salem, NC, Lisa Girouard of Shrewbury, MA; nephew Dewey Guy Wilkerson of Winston-Salem, NC. Mr. Boyle was preceded in death by his sister Anne Cecile Wilkerson Fain and nephew John Boyle Wilkerson, of Winston-Salem, NC.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be designated to the McColl Center for Visual Art, 721 N. Tryon St. Charlotte, NC 28202.
Salem Funeral Home and Scott Funeral Home are serving the Boyle family.
