John Addison Spencer
Winston-Salem – Mr. John Addison Spencer passed away Monday, January 16, 2012 at his treasured Topsail Beach vacation home. He was born in Carthage, NC, April 15, 1927 to Lena Fowler Spencer and Colin George Spencer, the youngest of five children.
He was a graduate of North Carolina State University and Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy and served in WWII as well as the Korean War. He worked in the Winston-Salem City Air Quality Department for several years and then began John A. Spencer Oil Company.
He enjoyed fixing things, Topsail Beach, golfing, NC State “College”, watching any team play any sport, flying the American Flag, being waited on, birddogs, sardines and saltines, cabbage, carrots, burnt toast, a good straw hat, and fishing in the Topsail Sara. He never ceased to amaze us with the many uses of duct tape and spray paint.
He was a member of Forsyth Country Club, Y-men, Centenary United Methodist Church, was treasurer for the Salvation Army Christmas Fund and served as the unofficial florist of the Chapel Class.
He is survived by the “catch of his life”, Sara Dalton Long Spencer, his wife of 55 years; two daughters: Fowler Spencer Ruffin and husband John and Robbin Spencer Dunthorn and husband Steve; one son, John Addison Spencer, Jr. and wife Stephanie; as well as grandchildren: Addison, Nathan and Stuart Ruffin, Austin, Lauren and Erin Spencer, and Dalton and Spencer Dunthorn. He is also survived by sisters Libby Spencer Deahl of Carthage and Lamar Spencer Verch of Rock Hill, SC.
A private graveside service at Salem Cemetery will precede a service at Centenary United Methodist Church on Saturday, January 21, at 3:30 p.m. with the family receiving friends afterwards.
Memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 W. 5th St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101 or the Salvation Army, P. O. Box 1205, Winston-Salem, NC 27102-1205.
John’s motto was “Back to basics…Never pay anyone to fix it, if you can fix it yourself, no matter how long it may take!”
Hold the lard and standby! Please honor John by wearing a bit of red on Saturday.
Aye, Talleyho!!!

We always enjoyed "Mr. Spencer" coming in to the office and all of us were very saddened to hear of his passing. I personally enjoyed talking with him about his WW2 Navy days since my dad served then as well. He will definitely be missed! Please know that he will be remembered by us all. His family is in our thoughts and prayers.
Kindest Regards,
Robin Miller

We've lost another one of "The Good Guys".

The second best thing (after getting our own Topsail cottage) was learning that John and Sara Spencer were our next door beach neighbors. It has enriched our lives to meet such a wonderful family who share our love for the island and its people. Going out beyond the inlet to catch Spanish with John; sharing sundowners with John and Sara; (John having a handful or two of "goobers" with his drink), meeting on the sandbar with them and Robbin, Steve, Spencer and Dalton--not to mention the dogs--it just doesn't get much better. The twinkle in John's eyes let you know that his gruff comments were never to be taken seriously. I could go on and on--and we've only known John and the family for a few years.
John's place will never be filled, but he must know that he will always live in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
Much love to Sara and the family,
Jim, Tricia and Jon Jordan

To Sarah and family:
Hearing of an old friend's death brings back special and unforgotten memories. I had been in Winston-Salem a year or little more when I went out alone to Reynolds Park on a Saturday morning to play golf. On the first green I noticed a single player begin on the first tee behind me. I waited for him to join me and introduced myself, He was John Spencer. He had just arrived in Winston to work for the city and we played the round together.
Erline was out of town for the weekend so John and I agreed to meet for dinner at the Town Steak
House. We met and from there developed a wonderful friendship. Further developing John's introduction to the City as we sat there, Louie Owen came in alone and joined us. Shortly, Nancy Vaughn Martin and her Mother came by and I introduced them to Louie and John. Louie thought Nancy Vaughn was a beauty and I encouraged him to ask her for a date. He did, they went on to marriage and John and I continued our friendship. Uncanny how the two of you, after marriage, moved across the street from us on Carolina Circle. Our bridge games were great.
You will be continously in mine and Erline's thoughts and prayers.
