Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem, NC
Clemmons – Mr. Sherman F. “Lew” Lewis, 90, of Clemmons passed away Sunday, June 20, 2010 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born November 12, 1919 in Wilkes County to the late Oscar and Charity Brown Lewis. He attended school in Ronda from where he joined the Army in 1939, serving in the Field Artillery, 83rd Division. He married his wife, Helen Caudle of Walkertown, and they were married for 68 years. He retired from Hanes Hosiery in 1983 where he had enjoyed many years of working as a machinist, receiving many awards for improving machine procedures. He has been described as an “inventor” for he was always looking for new ways to improve things. He was a faithful member of Oak Grove Moravian Church where he served on the Board of Elders and Trustees and was a Men’s Bible Class Sunday School Teacher. He also served on many church committees where he could help his church. Mr. Lewis was an avid fisherman and loved his boat and home in Emerald Isle, NC where he could take his friends and he really enjoyed his life. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers: Otha, John, Bill, Hugh and Cleve Lewis; five sisters: Gladys Seivers, Lottie Waggoner, Lois Irene Lewis, Hattie Cheek and Nina Torres. He is survived by his wife, Helen; one son, Kenneth Sherman Lewis and wife, Jo; three grandchildren: Heather Norman (Lee), Donna Clayton (Steve), Donny Lowery; great-granddaughter, Savannah Norman; two sisters: Mozelle Sheffield and Latisha Tripp and a host of nieces and nephews he dearly loved. Funeral services will be held at Oak Grove Moravian Church, 120 Hammock Farm Road, off Old Walkertown Road, at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 24, with Rev. Matthew Allen officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the burial. A special thanks to the staff at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Dr. Franklin Watkins and Dr. Mary Lyles of the Sticht Center for their special care. Memorials may be made to Oak Grove Moravian Church Building Fund.
