James Wiley Kester, 74, died Sunday, June 6, 2010 at the Hospice Home of Wake County, after a heroic six year battle with cancer. He was born November 28, 1935 in Winston-Salem, the son of the late Julius Curtis and Connie Fowler Kester. He is survived by his wife of 45 years Caroline Bickett Kester who was with him until his death. He is also survived by his nieces, I’ans Cecile Catherine Reeder of Winston-Salem, Nancy Blythe Irish, Julia Blythe Wade, both of Greensboro, NC, and his nephews, William Bickett Barrow of Morehead City, NC and Joseph James Barrow and his wife Lillian Elizabeth of Washington, DC. Jim was a graduate of Virginia Episcopal Preparatory School of Lynchburg, Virginia and received a BA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was a proud DKE. After school he returned to Winston-Salem to with his father at Kester Machinery Company, the family business founded by his grandfather in 1880 in Old Salem. Upon the retirement of his father he became President and CEO of the company until its sale. He moved to Raleigh in 1989 to work for the State Internal Revenue Service until his diagnosis of cancer. Even during his illness he worked part-time for the city of Raleigh in finance. During his life in Winston-Salem he was a member of the Twin City Club, Old Town Country Club, and Kiwanis. After college he served seven years in the Army Reserve and retired as a Sergeant Major. The family owes their eternal gratitude to all those people that were so helpful to him in his time of need. With special consideration to his doctors Dr. Wells Edmundson of Raleigh, Dr. Kenneth Zeitler of Rex Cancer Center and his special nurses Polly Addison RN and Angela Stewart of Hospice of Wake County. All the family sends their love and gratitude to all the special people at the Hospice Home of Wake County, especially Patti Austin, Stephanie Pavois, and Robin Neal. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at 3:30 PM at Forsyth Memorial Cemetery with The Reverend Jennifer C. Brown officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be made to the Hospice of Wake County Hospice Home, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607, and Christ Episcopal Church, 120 E.
